SPECIAL DANCE-&-LEARN PARTY FUNDRAISERS AND SILENT AUCTION FOR CHERYL SPECTOR...
Cheryl Spector Fundraiser Dance-&-Learn Parties, including mini-dance classes, performances, "So You Think You Can Dance DC" and "Dancing with the DC Stars" mini-competitions, a "Dancing with the AC/DC Stars" mini-competition for same-gender partners, silent auction, Argentine Tango performance & milonga and more...

We've all heard about the devastating fire loss of well-known local activist, Cheryl Spector whose archives of the past 20+ years in the Washington DC LGBT community were partially destroyed along with many of her personal belongings. Lambda DanceSport DC will hold a fundraising event in conjunction with the Chevy Chase Ballroom by using the previously scheduled Dance-&-Learn Parties as a means to aid in Cheryl's unfortunate loss. All of the admission fees will be donated from those who bring a notice from the home page of Lambda DanceSPORT DC (www.LambdaDanceSportDC.org) or the Lambda DanceSport News (www.LambdaDanceSportNews.com), as well as from a web site or email notice of any other LGBT organization which may post the event in Cheryl's behalf. Even if you cannot attend, just notifying others could be a major benefit. There is room for from 150 to 200 dancers and by spreading the time over a longer period throughout the night, we could bring in the assistance of even more donors.
By bringing a copy of the email or web site notice from this or any LGBT organization, those taking money at the door will earmark those funds taken in to Cheryl's benefit. Although it would be great to donate all of the funds taken in from the regular clientelle at the Chevy Chase Ballroom, the rent still needs to be paid. However, we believe that a great deal of aid may be made available to Cheryl by donating any funds received through the LGBT community to her cause.
Details are confirmed and more information will be available at any of the above web sites or by notice through the Lambda DanceSPORT DC web site (www.LambdaDanceSportDC.org). Once again, for those who bring a notice from any LGBT web site or email list regarding this as a Cheryl Spector fund raising event, 100% of any admission fees and/or donations will go to Cheryl. Also, since 100% of the funds will be transferred, those who wish to write checks may make them out to Cheryl directly, unless we have a 501c3 that may be collecting for her by then.
We are moving the starting time up on June 30th by an hour to 7:00pm so we can hold earlier beginner mini-classes and "Dancing with the DC Stars" competitions in Ballroom, Salsa & Rueda, Swing, C/W Two Step and possibly Disco/Hustle if time permits before a new beginner's milonga and mini-classes in Argentine Tango can start at 9:15 in the second studio. Dancing and practice, along with ongoing mini-classes in all of the social dances of Ballroom, Latin, Salsa & Rueda, Swing, Disco/Hustle, Brazilian Samba, Country/Western and more will continue throughout the evening in the main Ballroom until midnight, in addition to an Argentine Tango milonga between 10pm and 2am. During the evening we may also play some Hip Hop by request, including Mary J Blige, Usher and more for those who care to dance to R&B music. We may even learn some of the Fatima Robinson Hip Hop moves to Nelly's "Hot In Here" or a segment of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" for those who DARE to even try it...after all, Halloween is not that far away...(Visit www.MichaelJacksonsThriller.com for details...).
Snacks and refreshments will be available as always (including the usual pie right from the oven with ice cream). No previous dance experience or partner is necessary as all who attend are always beginners in one dance or another and partners will switch throughout the event. Also included will be demonstrations in the dances being taught plus performances by local dancers and dance teams, including the "Dancing Kids Network", a possible Salsa & Rueda or C/W performance and a knock-out Brazilian Samba Show in costume by authentic Brazilian Danielle Areco of www.BrazilLatino.com.
Plan to join us to aid in the assistance of one of our most devoted activists in the LGBT community for decades past. Regarding the silent auction, if everyone would go out and find one donation from a restaurant, or business of any type, we could come up with a major contribution to Cheryl's cause. We will be donating 10-class dance cards and 10-party dance cards from the Chevy Chase Ballroom for auction, plus winners in the "Dancing with the DC Stars" mini-competitions will receive 5-class cards good toward any combination of drop-in classes throughout the upcoming summer. Anyone who has experience in the field of silent auctions who would like to help out organizing that aspect of this event, please email TerryChasteen@yahoo.com. Table space can be made available during the event as well as items can be posted online. If anyone has a donation/bid form that could be duplicated from another silent auction and downloaded from our web site so that donors can bring one to the event with their donation, that would be really helpful and greatly appreciated. Since there will be limited staff, except for teachers and performers, we will already be buried on the day of to keep everything going. Consequently my hope is that the auction can be monitored by each individual donor (something which should be simple once we find the correct form). Hopefully we can also post any donations ahead of time online at the above sites so people can be better prepared to make their bids.

Let's all try to help out in a time of definite need for one of our own and what better and more enjoyable way to accomplish that than by doing so "Out On The Dance Floor"?!

Thanks,
Terry

Terry Chasteen teaching Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' on July 19, 2007 to Fox 5 News reporter Sarah Simmons using the CD version of 'Thriller' and including many of the moves that Michael danced around Ola Ray down the graveyard path. Unlike the DVD version of 'Thriller' , this is the music that all of the clubs will play night after night after night during the week of Halloween. Also included is some sign language for the benefit of the kids who Terry teaches this routine to often plus a lesson in the "Moonwalk". Parts of this taping wound up on Fox 5 News during 3 or 4 segments on July 19th and 20th. Sarah did a GREAT job in so little time, considering that it took Terry and dancer friend Alex 2 to 3 months to perfect the complete choreography from the DVD. By the way, this is only about 1/3 of the full routine.
