Subject: May 2008 5-Boro Dance News
Date: Sun, 11 May 2008 23:08:22 -0400

Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual 5 Boro Dance Challenge. We're doing a lot of things differently this year, so please let us know if you have any questions.

One thing that's different, we will be hosting the first ever North American Same-Sex Partner Dance Assocation (NASSPDA) sanctioned North American Same-Sex Championsihps. You can find out more about it by visiting their website: www.NASSPDA.org.

Another thing that's different this year is our venue. The first day of the event, which includes all of the competitions and a fabulous show, will be held at the Eisner Lubin Auditorium in the NYU Kimmel Center, at 60 Washington Square South. The second day, which will be a farewell tea-dance, will be held at the fabulous ballroom at Dance Studio 101, located at 101 Lafayette Street.

Last year's event was a huge success, largely due to all of you. Please help again this year. We need volunteers to help at the event. We also are looking for people who have an extra room and would like to house an out of town guest. It's a great way to meet new people who share your love of dance.

If you don't have the time to spare, or the space, but would like to donate something, you can come to the website and click the "Donate" button. www.5borodance.com Every bit helps.

We'll be updating the website a lot over the next few weeks with information about housing, schedules, and more, so keep checking back. See you in August, and remember, if you have any questions, you can write us at info@5borodance.com.

Best,
The 5-Boro Team

Dance Times Square has graciously offered sponsorship and rehearsal space in their studio leading up to the event (which, by the way is owned by two of my absolute favorite International Latin performers of all time, former US International Latin Champions, Tony Meredith & Melany LaPatan. If you can pull out the old PBS "Championship Ballroom Dancing" tapes [all of which I have under lock and key], you will see these two grace the dance floor for more than a decade. I am so jealous of my New York gay & lesbian brothers and sisters for having the privelage of working with thee two at the drop of a hat. I'd be spending every last dime that I could make if I was anywhere near them).

Among other things that we are working on for the event, we are trying to get fun and interesting vendors for our exhibit hall. For

xample, all the way from sunny('ish) Long Island, we have Aunt Barbara who will be giving tupperware demonstrations all weekend long. If you know of someone who might be interested in purchasing a vendor spot, or advertising in the event program, they can download our sponsorship information by clicking here.

Registration is now open, and you can register in two different ways. You can register on-line with a credit card or you can print-out registration forms and mail in your registration with a check or money order. Please register soon, as the sooner you register, the more accurate of a competition schedule we'll be able to create.

If you would like to help out in any way - we do need volunteers, or have any questions, you can contact us at info@5borodance.com. Don't forget to check out the 5 Boro Dance store at Cafe Press.

The goal of the 5 Boro Dance Challenge is to offer a dance competition in all dance styles for same-gender couples that is accessible to dancers all over the world who compete in all different styles of same-gender partner dance. The hope is to make this an event geared toward the enjoyment and advancement of this incredible art-form and sport. We also hope to promote other aspects of gay and lesbian culture that can easily be related to same-gender partner dancing, i.e.: music, dancing, theatricality, athletics, committed partnerships, etc. This will be a healthy, all-inclusive environment where non-dancers and dancers alike can get together and enjoy the artistry, athleticism and excitement of partner dance competitions for LGBT couples.
By promoting same-sex partner dancing through this event in New York City, the hope is that more people, both in New York and World-Wide, will become interested and involved in this art-form and sport which is considered by some as having the potential to become one of the most effective forms of grass-roots gay activism available to us today
. It is really difficult for even the worst bigots to criticize same-sex couples who are exceptionally talented and entertaining while OUT on the dance floor! (Visit Nobody asked for my opinion....BUT...Effective grass roots gay activism...not in the courts; or at the end of a picket sign, but rather "Out on the Dance Floor"!)
In addition, this and other LGBT dance competitions around the globe will hopefully inspire new potential competitors and aid in honing the talents of potential contestants for the upcoming World OutGames II, Copenhagen, 2009 and Gay Games VIII, Cologne, 2010.
