4. Oakland, California (past event in 2004) - the Mid-Winter Madness California Dancesport Championships for Same-gender Couples in Oakland, California. Saturday, March 6, 2004. (No new dates reported at this time. Visit the web site for updates)
(This event is open to and welcomes everyone).
Oakland Masonic Center, 3903 Broadway, Oakland, CA. Visit www.CalDanceChamp.com for complete details.

What an incredible turn-out and success it was for the first one of it's kind on the West Coast. At least four European couples attended, including the International Ballroom winners from Gay Games, Amsterdam and Sydney, plus America's own top,Top, TOP!! International Latin couple in division A, Russell Halley and Jorje Gutzman from New York. But don't dismay if you did miss it...there'll be another one later this year (September?..). Consequently I'm leaving this information so you can plan ahead.

On Saturday, March 6th – This “Major one-of-it’s-kind” U.S. dance competition for same-gender couples in Oakland was unbelievably successful and another is tentatively scheduled for the summer. The event Included ALL dances of ALL styles and ALL levels!!! Visit www.CalDanceChamp.com or www.LambdaDanceSport.org for future updates. Anyone who has even a remote possibility of attending should definitely do so, as this format will be very similar to Gay Games, Chicago, 2006 and the level of excitement and expertise in these dances will blow you away.

Enough cannot be said about the tremendous success of this one-of-it’s-kind DanceSport event for same-gender couples in the United States. Unlike any other in this country, it included grading classes to assure that all couples were dancing in the correct levels, as will take place in Gay Games VII, Chicago, 2006. Attending the comp were four couples from Europe; two from England and two from Germany. Included in those from Germany was the winning male couple in Ballroom from Gay Games V, Amsterdam, 1998 and Gay Games VI, Sydney, 2002. They also competed in the Ballroom level A comp, as did our very own U.S. Latin Champions, Russell and Jorje from New York. Russell and Jorje, as well as the German dancers provided a tremendous floor show to end the event which absolutely everyone in the room was overwhelmed by.

Hats off to Richard Lamberty, his extensive staff and the many, many, MANY competitors and spectators who attended and supported this first-of-it’s-kind event. I was personally thrilled with the outcome, as the success of this incredible event will assure that we will be seeing many more of them taking place here in the U.S in the future.…(perhaps in DC, someday soon?…).

(Following is the description of the event. I will keep posted on www.LambdaDanceSport.org, so anyone can plan ahead to the next one this summer and have an idea of the format ahead of time)…..

(Also, during my stay in San Francisco, I spent all day Friday photographing and interviewing numerous Lesbian and Gay couples during the historical goings-on on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall before and after the issuing of marriage licenses for same-gender couples. I hope to have the resulting photos, etc available soon)

Be part of history!
The March 6th, 2004 California Dancesport Championships Mid-Winter Madness Competition for same-gender couples is only the second ever LGBT competition in all of the Ballroom, Latin, Swing, C/W, Argentine Tango and Hustle dances in the US outside of New York City. Some of the top dancers from Europe, including Bernd Farwick and Klaus Padberg from Germany, the gold medal winners from the Gay Games V, Amsterdam, '98 and Gay Games VI, Sydney, 2002, plus plenty of American luminaries will be there to compete and dance in the show. This is truly a one-of-it's kind competitive dance event for LGBT dancers in the US. Anyone who has even a remote chance of attending should definitely do so. This format of grading competitors before the competition begins, unlike any others in this country to date, will be very similar to Gay Games VII, 2006. It is guaranteed that the level of excitememt and expertise in these dances will blow you away.

NEW YORK:

1. New York City's 5-Boro Dance Challenge, August 24th & 25th, 2008
, New York, New York (This event is open to and welcomes everyone, regardles of gender, style of dance and orientation of affection, including those who are non-LGBT). Visit www.5borodance.com for updated information or contact info@5borodance.com.

From: info@5borodance.com

Subject: May 2008 5-Boro Dance News
Date: Sun, 11 May 2008 23:08:22 -0400

Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual 5 Boro Dance Challenge. We're doing a lot of things differently this year, so please let us know if you have any questions.

One thing that's different, we will be hosting the first ever North American Same-Sex Partner Dance Assocation (NASSPDA) sanctioned North American Same-Sex Championsihps. You can find out more about it by visiting their website: www.NASSPDA.org.

Another thing that's different this year is our venue. The first day of the event, which includes all of the competitions and a fabulous show, will be held at the Eisner Lubin Auditorium in the NYU Kimmel Center, at 60 Washington Square South. The second day, which will be a farewell tea-dance, will be held at the fabulous ballroom at Dance Studio 101, located at 101 Lafayette Street.

Last year's event was a huge success, largely due to all of you. Please help again this year. We need volunteers to help at the event. We also are looking for people who have an extra room and would like to house an out of town guest. It's a great way to meet new people who share your love of dance.

If you don't have the time to spare, or the space, but would like to donate something, you can come to the website and click the "Donate" button. www.5borodance.com Every bit helps.

We'll be updating the website a lot over the next few weeks with information about housing, schedules, and more, so keep checking back. See you in August, and remember, if you have any questions, you can write us at info@5borodance.com.

Best,
The 5-Boro Team

Dance Times Square has graciously offered sponsorship and rehearsal space in their studio leading up to the event (which, by the way is owned by two of my absolute favorite International Latin performers of all time, former US International Latin Champions, Tony Meredith & Melany LaPatan. If you can pull out the old PBS "Championship Ballroom Dancing" tapes [all of which I have under lock and key], you will see these two grace the dance floor for more than a decade. I am so jealous of my New York gay & lesbian brothers and sisters for having the privelage of working with thee two at the drop of a hat. I'd be spending every last dime that I could make if I was anywhere near them).

Among other things that we are working on for the event, we are trying to get fun and interesting vendors for our exhibit hall. For

xample, all the way from sunny('ish) Long Island, we have Aunt Barbara who will be giving tupperware demonstrations all weekend long. If you know of someone who might be interested in purchasing a vendor spot, or advertising in the event program, they can download our sponsorship information by clicking here.

Registration is now open, and you can register in two different ways. You can register on-line with a credit card or you can print-out registration forms and mail in your registration with a check or money order. Please register soon, as the sooner you register, the more accurate of a competition schedule we'll be able to create.

If you would like to help out in any way - we do need volunteers, or have any questions, you can contact us at info@5borodance.com. Don't forget to check out the 5 Boro Dance store at Cafe Press.

The goal of the 5 Boro Dance Challenge is to offer a dance competition in all dance styles for same-gender couples that is accessible to dancers all over the world who compete in all different styles of same-gender partner dance. The hope is to make this an event geared toward the enjoyment and advancement of this incredible art-form and sport. We also hope to promote other aspects of gay and lesbian culture that can easily be related to same-gender partner dancing, i.e.: music, dancing, theatricality, athletics, committed partnerships, etc. This will be a healthy, all-inclusive environment where non-dancers and dancers alike can get together and enjoy the artistry, athleticism and excitement of partner dance competitions for LGBT couples.
By promoting same-sex partner dancing through this event in New York City, the hope is that more people, both in New York and World-Wide, will become interested and involved in this art-form and sport which is considered by some as having the potential to become one of the most effective forms of grass-roots gay activism available to us today
. It is really difficult for even the worst bigots to criticize same-sex couples who are exceptionally talented and entertaining while OUT on the dance floor! (Visit Nobody asked for my opinion....BUT...Effective grass roots gay activism...not in the courts; or at the end of a picket sign, but rather "Out on the Dance Floor"!)
In addition, this and other LGBT dance competitions around the globe will hopefully inspire new potential competitors and aid in honing the talents of potential contestants for the upcoming World OutGames II, Copenhagen, 2009 and Gay Games VIII, Cologne, 2010.

This event is a mixed LGBT and non-LGBT event...which we should all be attending more of in our dancing. We aren't ever going to be accepted as loving, caring and DANCING couples as long as we continue to keep hiding our social lives in the closet. That's OUR choice...not anyone else's. And we continue to suffer the consequences of "non-acceptance" that are encouraged by our staying out of the public eye.

Friday, July 11th - Early evening happy hour "Country & Latin Night ... at Remington's on Capital Hill".
A fundraiser at Remington's on Capital Hill right after work to benefit the legal fees of Equality Maryland for trans-inclusive legislation. Join us for early 7pm-9pm mini-dance classes and practice in Salsa & Rueda, Cha Cha, Rumba, 2-step and other social Latin & country dances (we may even learn a segment of "Michael Jackson's Thriller" by request. This is not a watered-down "for-white-guys-who-can't-dance" version, but rather the original Michael Jackson's Thriller routine directly from the ahead-of-it's-time 1982 video. Visit www.MichaelJacksonsThriller.com), followed later in the evening by country & Latin mini-dance contests (winners chosen by audience applause, so this is the time to invite your loudest and most obnoxious friends, neighbors and family members to cheer for you!...), performances, raffles & more. Check back for details as they become available at www.LambdaDanceSportDC.org.
Mini-classes will be available for newcomers from 7-9pm on specific Fridays in Salsa & Rueda plus other Latin dances and 2-Step, followed by dancing and practice when the club opens at 9pm. Donation: $20.00 or whatever one feels they can afford to participate (100% of which goes to Equality Maryland. Consequently checks for the complete amount may be made directly to Equality Maryland). We'll also hold amateur newcomer "So You Think You Can Dance DC", "Dancing with the DC Stars" and "Dancing With The AC/DC Stars" for same-gender couples in both Latin & C/W dances during the evening; open to anyone who attends the earlier classes and wishes to participate (winners chosen by audience applause) plus lottery give-aways, door prizes and other incentives to get people to stay longer and dance, all of which which will help ensure that this is a productive event for the club and ensure future such fundraising events in the future.

So join us in the sport and art of Lambda DanceSport for same-gender couples. A sport that could well become one of the most effective forms of grass-roots gay activism available to us today. Not in the courts or at the end of a picket sign (though those are important, as well), but rather Out On The Dance Floor!! (www.pleasedancewithme.com/gmyopinion.htm#grassrootsgayactivism).

You've been watching
"America's Ballroom Challenge" on PBS,
"So you Think You Can Dance" on FOX
AND
"Dancing with the Stars" on ABC,

Metropolitan Washington DC is definitely becoming a city of
BALLROOM, LATIN, TANGO, HIP HOP & SWING DANCING...

...now is the time for YOU to
BECOME ONE OF THOSE STARS...
"Out on The Dance Floor" as same-gender couples!!..

Make plans to join Lambda DanceSPORT DC, Equality Maryland and Remington's on Capital Hill for this fun-filled, non-stop, charitable event; 100% of which will directly benefit Equality Maryland. Help to fight bigotry and discrimination, not only in Maryland but also in every other state in this country by getting "Out of our Social Closets" and Out On The Dance Floor!!
