4. Oakland, California (past event in 2004) - the Mid-Winter Madness California Dancesport Championships for Same-gender Couples in Oakland, California. Saturday, March 6, 2004. (No new dates reported at this time. Visit the web site for updates)
(This event is open to and welcomes everyone).
Oakland Masonic Center, 3903 Broadway, Oakland, CA. Visit www.CalDanceChamp.com for complete details.

What an incredible turn-out and success it was for the first one of it's kind on the West Coast. At least four European couples attended, including the International Ballroom winners from Gay Games, Amsterdam and Sydney, plus America's own top,Top, TOP!! International Latin couple in division A, Russell Halley and Jorje Gutzman from New York. But don't dismay if you did miss it...there'll be another one later this year (September?..). Consequently I'm leaving this information so you can plan ahead.

On Saturday, March 6th – This “Major one-of-it’s-kind” U.S. dance competition for same-gender couples in Oakland was unbelievably successful and another is tentatively scheduled for the summer. The event Included ALL dances of ALL styles and ALL levels!!! Visit www.CalDanceChamp.com or www.LambdaDanceSport.org for future updates. Anyone who has even a remote possibility of attending should definitely do so, as this format will be very similar to Gay Games, Chicago, 2006 and the level of excitement and expertise in these dances will blow you away.

Enough cannot be said about the tremendous success of this one-of-it’s-kind DanceSport event for same-gender couples in the United States. Unlike any other in this country, it included grading classes to assure that all couples were dancing in the correct levels, as will take place in Gay Games VII, Chicago, 2006. Attending the comp were four couples from Europe; two from England and two from Germany. Included in those from Germany was the winning male couple in Ballroom from Gay Games V, Amsterdam, 1998 and Gay Games VI, Sydney, 2002. They also competed in the Ballroom level A comp, as did our very own U.S. Latin Champions, Russell and Jorje from New York. Russell and Jorje, as well as the German dancers provided a tremendous floor show to end the event which absolutely everyone in the room was overwhelmed by.

Hats off to Richard Lamberty, his extensive staff and the many, many, MANY competitors and spectators who attended and supported this first-of-it’s-kind event. I was personally thrilled with the outcome, as the success of this incredible event will assure that we will be seeing many more of them taking place here in the U.S in the future.…(perhaps in DC, someday soon?…).

(Following is the description of the event. I will keep posted on www.LambdaDanceSport.org, so anyone can plan ahead to the next one this summer and have an idea of the format ahead of time)…..

(Also, during my stay in San Francisco, I spent all day Friday photographing and interviewing numerous Lesbian and Gay couples during the historical goings-on on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall before and after the issuing of marriage licenses for same-gender couples. I hope to have the resulting photos, etc available soon)

Be part of history!
The March 6th, 2004 California Dancesport Championships Mid-Winter Madness Competition for same-gender couples is only the second ever LGBT competition in all of the Ballroom, Latin, Swing, C/W, Argentine Tango and Hustle dances in the US outside of New York City. Some of the top dancers from Europe, including Bernd Farwick and Klaus Padberg from Germany, the gold medal winners from the Gay Games V, Amsterdam, '98 and Gay Games VI, Sydney, 2002, plus plenty of American luminaries will be there to compete and dance in the show. This is truly a one-of-it's kind competitive dance event for LGBT dancers in the US. Anyone who has even a remote chance of attending should definitely do so. This format of grading competitors before the competition begins, unlike any others in this country to date, will be very similar to Gay Games VII, 2006. It is guaranteed that the level of excitememt and expertise in these dances will blow you away.

NEW YORK:

1. New York City's 5-Boro Dance Challenge, August 24th & 25th, 2008
, New York, New York (This event is open to and welcomes everyone, regardles of gender, style of dance and orientation of affection, including those who are non-LGBT). Visit www.5borodance.com for updated information or contact info@5borodance.com.

From: info@5borodance.com
To: terrychasteen@hotmail.com
Subject: May 2008 5-Boro Dance News
Date: Sun, 11 May 2008 23:08:22 -0400

Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual 5 Boro Dance Challenge. We're doing a lot of things differently this year, so please let us know if you have any questions.

One thing that's different, we will be hosting the first ever North American Same-Sex Partner Dance Assocation (NASSPDA) sanctioned North American Same-Sex Championsihps. You can find out more about it by visiting their website: www.NASSPDA.org.

Another thing that's different this year is our venue. The first day of the event, which includes all of the competitions and a fabulous show, will be held at the Eisner Lubin Auditorium in the NYU Kimmel Center, at 60 Washington Square South. The second day, which will be a farewell tea-dance, will be held at the fabulous ballroom at Dance Studio 101, located at 101 Lafayette Street.

Last year's event was a huge success, largely due to all of you. Please help again this year. We need volunteers to help at the event. We also are looking for people who have an extra room and would like to house an out of town guest. It's a great way to meet new people who share your love of dance.

If you don't have the time to spare, or the space, but would like to donate something, you can come to the website and click the "Donate" button. www.5borodance.com Every bit helps.

We'll be updating the website a lot over the next few weeks with information about housing, schedules, and more, so keep checking back. See you in August, and remember, if you have any questions, you can write us at info@5borodance.com.

Best,
The 5-Boro Team

Dance Times Square has graciously offered sponsorship and rehearsal space in their studio leading up to the event (which, by the way is owned by two of my absolute favorite International Latin performers of all time, former US International Latin Champions, Tony Meredith & Melany LaPatan. If you can pull out the old PBS "Championship Ballroom Dancing" tapes [all of which I have under lock and key], you will see these two grace the dance floor for more than a decade. I am so jealous of my New York gay & lesbian brothers and sisters for having the privelage of working with thee two at the drop of a hat. I'd be spending every last dime that I could make if I was anywhere near them).

Among other things that we are working on for the event, we are trying to get fun and interesting vendors for our exhibit hall. For

xample, all the way from sunny('ish) Long Island, we have Aunt Barbara who will be giving tupperware demonstrations all weekend long. If you know of someone who might be interested in purchasing a vendor spot, or advertising in the event program, they can download our sponsorship information by clicking here.

Registration is now open, and you can register in two different ways. You can register on-line with a credit card or you can print-out registration forms and mail in your registration with a check or money order. Please register soon, as the sooner you register, the more accurate of a competition schedule we'll be able to create.

If you would like to help out in any way - we do need volunteers, or have any questions, you can contact us at info@5borodance.com. Don't forget to check out the 5 Boro Dance store at Cafe Press.

The goal of the 5 Boro Dance Challenge is to offer a dance competition in all dance styles for same-gender couples that is accessible to dancers all over the world who compete in all different styles of same-gender partner dance. The hope is to make this an event geared toward the enjoyment and advancement of this incredible art-form and sport. We also hope to promote other aspects of gay and lesbian culture that can easily be related to same-gender partner dancing, i.e.: music, dancing, theatricality, athletics, committed partnerships, etc. This will be a healthy, all-inclusive environment where non-dancers and dancers alike can get together and enjoy the artistry, athleticism and excitement of partner dance competitions for LGBT couples.
By promoting same-sex partner dancing through this event in New York City, the hope is that more people, both in New York and World-Wide, will become interested and involved in this art-form and sport which is considered by some as having the potential to become one of the most effective forms of grass-roots gay activism available to us today
. It is really difficult for even the worst bigots to criticize same-sex couples who are exceptionally talented and entertaining while OUT on the dance floor! (Visit Nobody asked for my opinion....BUT...Effective grass roots gay activism...not in the courts; or at the end of a picket sign, but rather "Out on the Dance Floor"!)
In addition, this and other LGBT dance competitions around the globe will hopefully inspire new potential competitors and aid in honing the talents of potential contestants for the upcoming World OutGames II, Copenhagen, 2009 and Gay Games VIII, Cologne, 2010.

Philadelphia Liberty LGBT Dance Challenge 2011 poster for March 26, 2011

Hi, everyone,

This is coming up at the end of the month and there's a group discount for 10 or more. I've contacted organizer Gene LePeletier to determine how much it is ($35 for the evening grand Ball as opposed to $40 and $10 for the matinee as opposed to $15 per person).

The entry for anyone wishing to compete is $75 per person and imcludes unlimited entries in as amny dances as one cares to enter and with as mnay partners. This ALSO INCLUDES ADMISSION TO THE BALLROOM so a great deal if you care to get your feet wet 'Out On The Dance Floor! (www.OutOnTheDanceFloor.com).

Please let me know if you have that day available and if you're interested in going so I can get the names to him and determine if we have enough for the discount. It would be great to have a DC/Va contingent to attend en masse this year. After all, the next Gay Games will be very close in 2014 (Cleveland, Ohio) so now is a great time to start working at it for any one or all 3 styles of competition in International Style Ballroom, Country/Western and International Latin. Whether or not one competes, the huge evening Balls are incredible and you'll want to at least be able to dance with lgbt dancers from around the globe. This was one of THE most fun events I've ever attended in '98 at Gay Games, Amsterdam.

In addition, this weekend is the Team DC Fashion Show and Model Search, which is our big annual big fundraiser on Sat from about 7 to 10. DanceSport is one of the sports included for Team DC. This is a really fun event and well worth your time with all of the male models doing their thing (sorry, ladies, it's just the guys at this one but I'm pushing for adding a Ladies' version for next year...so get in that gym, maybe you can ENTER!).

Thanks,

 ~ Terry

For those who want to compete in any # of dances, the Early Bird Special of $75 per person includes registration fee for unlimited entries in all dances and admission to the Ballroom as a spectator *Formation & Showdance events not included in earlybird special

Entry Forms and Fees must be postmarked by March 1, 2011 for Early Bird Special (Gene has told me that this deadline will be waived if we get them in ASAP. ALSO! VERY IMPORTANT! I just found out that unlike during Gay Games, Newcomers or lower level dancers can dance with more experienced dancers in the newcomer division without the more experienced dancers having to give up their regular more experienced partners. Great news to help those just thinking about competing to get their feet wet. This is similar to pro/am with either pro or higher level partners as long as the pro or more advanced partner isn't being paid to enter the comp with them.

Every contestant must fill out a Registration Form . One Entry form and accounting form must be filled out for each partnership; payments (check or money order made out to B&L productions) must accompany forms. Deadline for entries: May 15, 2006.

Mail completed forms to : B & L Dance Productions LLC, 420 Greenview Rd, Turnersville, NJ 08012

This event is a mixed LGBT and non-LGBT event...which we should all be attending more of in our dancing. We aren't ever going to be accepted as loving, caring and DANCING couples as long as we continue to keep hiding our social lives in the closet. That's OUR choice...not anyone else's. And we continue to suffer the consequences of "non-acceptance" that are encouraged by our staying out of the public eye.

12. (past event) Plan to join us during Capital Pride week, 2007 for a unique and fun-filled dance experience at

Plan to join us on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007
for a unique and one-of-it's kind dance experience during the

First Annual
"Out
On The Dance Floor Charity Ball"
(Visit www.OUTonTheDanceFloor.org)

which is tentatively being considered for the first Saturday of Capital Pride week, June 2nd, 2007 by the "Westminster Presbyterian Church's GLBT Alliance" (www.westminsterdc.org), 400 I st., SW, Washington DC as well as DC's LGBT and Friends' Ballroom, Latin, Disco/hustle C/W and Swing dance organization"Lambda DanceSPORT DC" (www.DanceTeamDC.us), Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Washington DC (PLFAG DC at www.pflagdc.org) and Terry Chasteen's International DanceSPORT & Entertainment Co. (www.PleaseDanceWithMe.com). Make plans well in advance so as not to miss any part of this unforgettable dance night; destined to be an event unlike any ever before experienced by the LGBT and friends' dance community in Metropolitan Washington DC.
Included in the plans are proposed mini-classes in all of the social dance styles (Ballroom, Latin, Brazilian Samba, Disco/Hustle, Salsa & Rueda, Swing, C/W, Argentine Tango and more...), plus some incredible and not-to-be-missed dance performances and demonstrations, mini-dance competitions in Salsa, Swing and Ballroom AND last but certainly not least, the first annual Washington DC "Out On The Dance Floor Robo-Cha Cha Dance Championhips", all of which are open for everyone to enter and all of the winners of which will be determined by audience applause (so invite your loudest and most obnoxious friends, relatives and family members to be on your cheering squad).
Also provided will be refreshments and food plus a silent auction and sponsorship and donation program, 100% of which will benefit a number of charitable recipients which are being considered such as PFLAG DC (www.pflagdc.org), Katie Couric's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (www.eifoundation.org/national/nccra/splash/ ), Mary Tyler Moore's Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) (www.jdrf.org/ ), Oprah's Angel Network (www.oprahsangelnetwork.org/oan/Home), Marlo Thomas's St Jude's Children Research Hospital (www.stjude.org),
Children's Hospital of Washington DC (www.dcchildrens.com), The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) (www.michaeljfox.org), Whitman-Walker Clinic (www.wwc.org), the Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer (www.mautnerproject.org), The Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (www.Komen.org) and/or any other charitable organization preferred by each individual donor or corporate sponsor in the name of the "Out On The Dance Floor Charity Ball". Since every dime of the donated funds will go directly to the selected charity(s), checks may be made directly to each chosen foundation. If you would like to make a silent auction donation or an individual or corporate sponsorship or to volunteer your time before and/or during the event, contact TerryChasteen@yahoo.com.
Lastly we will be providing an opportunity for everyone in the Washington Metropolitan area to experience more fun, more entertainment, more music and more dancing in one night than one could possibly imagine. And THAT is a PROMISE!...ASL will be available and both blind and deaf dancers are welcome and encouraged. We guarantee that they'll have as much fun as those who see and hear.
Dress will be formal or semi-formal consisting of (1) black-tie, (2) suit or jacket and tie or (3) white tie and tails, plus formal gown or drag (no campy worn out drag costumes, please. We want everyone to look fabulous for all of the media who will be attending...and we guarantee there will be TONS! of media attending...).
Also not to worry if you're not already dancing. A major portion of those attending will be brand new beginners. Plus we'll have plenty of dance teachers and assistants available to help anyone with questions about their dancing both during and between instruction. Invite "ALL" of your friends and family members to join us as this is definitely not going to be a "LGBT-only event", but rather one that encourages everyone to come together to celebrate these incredible gifts of music and dance and to participate from all aspects of the Metropolitan Washington area. A concept that some in the LGBT community feel should be much more promoted to better exemplify the true social lifestyles of the LGBT community as opposed to what some prefer to portray. One of the main objectives of this event in addition to encouraging fundraising and awareness for all of our incredible charitable organizations is to encourage all same-gender couples and those in the LGBT community to become more comfortable with dancing "Out of the Closet" and "Out On The Dance Floor!!" in the non-LGBT public.
With room for only about 300 guests maximum to attend, plan to make your reservations early at TerryChasteen@yahoo.com. T
his event is still in the infancy of it's planning and nothing is yet written in stone, so we are interested in any suggestions and of course in volunteers. However even at this early stage of our planning, we do GUARANTEE that everyone attending, from all walks of life, will enjoy more fun, more entertainment, more music and MORE DANCING in one night than one can possibly imagine. This DanceSPORT event will be unlike anything ever before experienced in the shadows of our Nation's Capitol.
Check back regularly at
www.OUTonTheDanceFloor.org for updated information as it becomes available. We all really need to make more of an effort to get more couples in the LGBT community to start socializing more frequently "Out of the Closet" and "Out On The Dance Floor!!"
Everyone of all age groups are welcome and encouraged from kids to senior citizens and oh and did I mention? The admission is
"FREE
!!", though any corporate sponsorships and donations to any of our (or your) chosen charities will definitely be appreciated. We encourage everyone, including the kids, to contact their friends, teachers, family members and/or business associates to obtain pledges, though that is definitely not a requirement to attend. You can download a pledge form at www.pleasedancewithme.com/outonthedancefloorballpledgeform.htm to turn in with checks or funds. 100% of any donations, silent auction sales and corporate or individual sponsorships will go directly to the charitable foundations, so checks that are turned in may be made out directly to the recieving 501c3 charity(s) or to the Westminster Foundation to be distributed equally among our selected 501c3 charities (all donations are 100% tax-deductible).

and Thanks! We hope you'll make plans early to join us on Saturday June 2nd "Out On The Dance Floor!!",

Terry and the organizing team of the 2007 "Out On The Dance Floor Charity Ball".

World Outgames II will take place from 1 - 8 August, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark

The World Outgames 2009 is taking shape in Copenhagen. The Danish capital was chosen to host the games long ago, but now the major international culture and sports event for gays and lesbians has the money to realise its plans. Copenhagen Council has committed DKK20m to the project, and Wonderful Copenhagen and UNIK HR have commenced the search for partners to spearhead the preparations.

The parties have collaborated to establish an organisation to handle the event, which encompasses partnerships with sponsors and volunteers prior to and during the event. The organisation will also be responsible for contact with hotels and transport companies to ensure an appropriate execution of the event.

NEW ORGANISATION
Since 2006 World Outgames 2009 has been organised under Wonderful Copenhagen. From 1st January 2007 the establishment of a new organisation will give the necessary freedom of action and ongoing management of the funds set aside for the project. Copenhagen municipal politicians will be involved in the work of the organisation, and the new board will benefit from the talents of members from the City Council, Wonderful Copenhagen, Pan Idræt and the LGBT community.

SPORT IN DENMARK
The City of Copenhagen has a history of partnership with the two major sporting organisations in Denmark, the DGI (Danish Gymnastics and Sports Association) and the DIF (National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark) in the organisation of various projects. This will also occur in the planning for the sport events of the World Outgames 2009. Pan Idræt is a well-known Copenhagen sports club, and is a member of both organisations.

Some of the largest sports clubs in Copenhagen will also take an active part in organising some of the sports events.

The main partners of World Outgames are: GLISA, the City of Copenhagen, Wonderful Copenhagen & Pan Idræt.

Cologne: Beautiful City on the Rhine
Gay Games VIII will offer participants a chance to compete at Germany Sports University in Cologne. You can expect sports excellence from our German hosts, and if you have never been to Cologne, you will be pleased by the beauty of this location on the Rhine. Cologne was a former Roman city built over 2,000 years ago with many sites to visit during Gay Games. Tours of old town will be available in many languages – both walking tours and river cruises.

City of Gay Pride:
Cologne hosts the biggest Gay Pride in Germany, Cologne Gay Pride (formerly: Christopher Street Days Cologne). Germany is very progressive about gay rights and very welcoming to the LGBT community. Cologne’s LGBT population boasts of over 100,000 residents.

Passports, Hotels, and flights:
Many participants are starting to budget and plan for 2010. Be sure to check your passport expiration date to allow a replacement in plenty of time. Check out the hotel prices online and you will find Cologne has plenty of hotel choices for every budget. Compare hotels and flights around Europe – Cologne is an hour’s flight from many of the major European cities, and has direct high-speed train connections to European capitals. Hotels, food, drinks and even taxes are much lower in Germany than in some other countries. Cologne 2010 hosts will also arrange special hotel deals and travel deals for participants. We will keep you updated and you can subscribe to Cologne’s newsletter at http://www.games-cologne.com.

In just over two years, Cologne, Germany will play host to athletes and performers from around the world. From 15-22 July 2006, Chicago will play host to the world and welcome thousands of athletes, spectators and cultural participants into our homes, our hearts and our city for the seventh quadrennial Gay Games Sports and Cultural Festival. The Games will feature 12,000 participants, competition in 30 sports, world-class athletes and artists, band and choral performances, nightly medal ceremonies, a week-long arts festival, parties, and spectacular opening and closing ceremonies featuring entertainment, pageantry, and the parade of participants from more than 70 countries.

The Gay Games are open to anyone. There are no qualifying events, no minimum or maximum requirements, and no mandatory affiliations. The Games are built on the founding principles of Participation, Inclusion, and Personal Best, and promote a supportive environment, free from bigotry, where participants achieve success by their own measure. More than a tournament or cultural program, the Gay Games is a gathering of the international sports and arts community that changes lives, attitudes, and the very nature of competition.

This will be a Gay Games for the ages. The sports and cultural components will be directed by experts in their fields, the tournaments and performances will be professionally organized, the competition and culture will be top flight, and the events will be held at world-class facilities sure to bring out your personal best. Most activities will be bundled into four sports villages to maximize convenience and to foster camaraderie and support among participants. The villages, easily accessible by public transportation, are built around some of Chicago's most stunning recreational, cultural, and historic centers.

Dance Venue: The Hilton Towers Chicago Grand Ballroom

The Versailles-inspired Grand Ballroom, adorned in 24-karat gold leaf, offers classic elegance to accommodate this prestigious event. The room has hosted kings and queens, not to mention every USA President since Harry Truman (1947-1952). Colonial French oil paintings, ornate 22-carat gold leaf moldings, mirrors and eight French brass and crystal chandeliers decorate the Grand Ballroom, often the setting for grand social events, weddings, receptions and even Hollywood movie makers.

The entire room is circled by a grand balcony, and tables will surround the competition dance floor. The Hilton, located on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, is near the Gay Games Hub, several other events, and Millennium Park, where the nightly Medal Ceremonies will take place.

When you enter Soldier Field on Sunday, 15 July 2006, and bask in the emotion of our Opening Ceremony, you will begin to understand the passion that drives the Gay Games. Throughout the next 8 days, whether you take home a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Participation Medal, or simply come to support your friends and colleagues in their own dreams, you will have memories of a lifetime, and mark your place in the 25-year legacy of the Gay Games.

After all, our slogan is really the slogan of every Gay Games past and into the future - the Gay Games are truly
"Where the World Meets."

Chicago at sunrise

Chicago has been announced as the next host city for the 2006 Gay Games®. Start training and practicing now to dance in one of, if not THEE most exciting dance event for same-gender couples "anywhere" in July of 2006. Chicago is bringing this incredible event to the US and Ballroom and Latin dancing "will" again be a part of it, along with new additions of Country & Western and West Coast Swing! Anyone can enter, from newcomers and beginners to the most accomplished amateurs and professionals (not all in the same events, of course...though that might be fun to watch...). Participants may dance 3 dances for the beginner level and up to 5 dances each in Ballroom and/or Latin in the advanced level.

Again, anyone can enter, and a tremendous amount of previous experience is not at all necessary. Most of those competing have always been beginners, so no one should feel like this is too far advanced for "me" to compete. The overall objective is to do your best in the amount of time that you have to commit and it is GUARANTEED that you will have the "time of your life"! (...trust me...I’ve been there and speak directly from personal experience...)
For more information, visit www.GayGamesChicago.org.

Other competitions nearby include Beach Volleyball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball.

Now is the time for you to start training. And if you don't have a partner, not to worry. Good partners come out of the woodwork when you're good at what you do and when you've taken the time to prepare yourself for this incredible sport. Good dance partners "never" come to you when you sit back and eat Bon Bon's until the right one comes along. Because people who make good dance partners want someone who has already made a committment and is ready to go. If you don't understand that, go out and rent "Strictly Ballroom" again and pay attention to how many people wanted to dance with "Tina Sparkle"! Everybody wanted to dance with Tina Sparkle because she was "prepared and ready to hit the top"! You, too can be ready to hit the top with only 3 dances to perform in the beginner level by 2006.

The final word on guidelines in changing of partners between events:
Dancers in different age groups and different dance styles in the Gay Games events are permitted to switch partners from one to another. Those dancers 45 years and older may dance below their age group, however those younger than 45 may not dance up into the over 45 category. Someone 45 years or over may dance in both categories and can switch at will between the different dance styles. Couples over 45 each can also compete in the under 45 division if they care to with different or the same partner. That way they can compete in the graded division and then still get the recognition in their own category (who knows they may win both!).
Also....please ignore the statement on page 4 of the Gay Games DanceSport registration page "your partner must remain the same. throughout the competition", as this is incorrect and is in the process of being changed by the web master. Go to the Q & A section of the DanceSport section for clarification, which reads "You must remain with one partner throughout a style’s competition, but when you switch from Modern Ballroom to Latin American, for example, you may switch partners for the new style".
You may also switch partners if you are over 45 in which case you are eligible to dance both above 45 and under 45, in case you care to do both. You may have a different partner in each event and in each age division. Those under 45 may not dance in the over 45 division, but over 45-year-old dancers may dance in both with the same or different partners.

Early registration for both Gay Games, Chicago, 2006 and the 1st World OutGames, Montreal, 2006 both end on December 31st, 2004. Pre-register now for significant savings and to insure that you have a spot to dance; even if you don't yet have a definite partner.

Billy Bean Joins list of Gay Games Ambassadors
Former U.S. Major League Baseball player lauds Gay Games' goals

"For 20 years, the Gay Games has been instrumental in fostering positive images of the LGBT community through sports and culture," said Bean from his home in Miami Beach. "As a lifelong athlete and gay man, supporting the Gay Games and its principles of 'participation, inclusion and personal best' is something I can embrace with a great amount of enthusiasm. I'm pleased to be asked to join the Gay Games Ambassadors."

Gay Games VII will be held in Chicago from 15-22 July, 2006. Bean joins a list of Gay Games Ambassadors supporting the upcoming Chicago event including tennis legend Billie Jean King, former U.S. Ambassador James Hormel, Olympic gold medal swimmer Bruce Hayes, actress Judith Light, and artist Tom Bianchi.

Bean, a California native, joined the Detroit Tigers in 1987 with a bang by tying a U.S. record with four hits in his first major league game. He subsequently played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. In 1996, in the prime of his career, Bean walked away from Major League Baseball, in part because of a year-long struggle dealing with the sudden death of his former partner, and the frustration of holding on to that secret alone. His desire not to let that happen to anyone else motivated him to come out in 1999, sharing his story and urging people to use honesty as a foundation for life.

For the past five years Bean has worked actively to dispel myths and stereotypes about people of diversity, particularly in athletics. He serves as a national spokesperson for the U.S. organization the Human Rights Campaign, doing outreach to young adults who are desperately in need of a role model.

"Billy's accomplishments since his days in professional baseball have brought him widespread attention and admiration because he's been working to make a positive difference in the world," said Federation of Gay Games co-president Roberto Mantaci of Paris. "He is a perfect addition to our Ambassadors program as the Gay Games has similar goals."

Bean is one of very few former professional athletes and the only living former Major League Baseball player to acknowledge his homosexuality. He and his partner of nine years, Efrain Veiga, share a real estate business redeveloping residential properties. He is the author of "Going the Other Way: Lessons from a Life In and Out of Major League Baseball" (Avalon Publishing Group, NYC). A film adaptation of his book, produced by Storyline Entertainment, will air soon on the Showtime, a U.S. television network.

"I'm also looking forward to participating at the Chicago Gay Games by playing in the tennis tournament," said Bean. "And, although I won't be playing softball, you can bet I'll find time to attend a game or two to give some encouraging cheers."

IAGLCWDC (International Association of Gay and Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs) will be sanctioning the event using IAGLCWDC rules, as well as providing the judges, etc. General competition rules may be found on the web site of IAGLCWDC at www.iaglcwdc.org/dance/dance.html or www.OutCountryDance.org/dance/dance.html (though it seems as though these general rules should be varied to be all-inclusive of professional competitors as well as to be all-inclusive without requiring previous qualifying as in the other sports and in Ballroom & Latin competitions during the World OutGames, Montreal, 2006.

Rules/Sanctioning – IDSF (International Style), IAGLCWDC (Country/Western Style).
