Not one of the 60,000+ deaths or 250,000+ injuries in 2008 resulting from texting and talking on the phone is worth any one of those phone calls or text messages; not to mention the hundreds of thousands that have taken place since. This is not a teenager problem nor is it just a commercial truck or bus driver problem. This is a problem and an ongoing danger to innocent people that involves EVERY SINGLE DRIVER in this country on a daily basis. So why are we still pondering over the use of cell phones while driving in the US? DC and several states have already wisely and responsibly outlawed the use of all cell phones while driving and now it needs to be a national restriction. Are we going to continue allowing the lobbyists of the wealthy phone companies to rule congress in America (which is now going to be even worse since the US Supreme Court has removed campaign finance restrictions instead of strengthening them), or are we each going to stand up to the plate and do something about it?

Nobody asked for my opinion...BUT..

(posted in 2007) As contraversial as this may be for many of you who love to do business or chat away with friends and relatives in the car, I do mean ALL cell phone use should be stopped ASAP; not just texting, not just those handhelds without ear phones, not just for new drivers and teenagers...ALL cell phones are distractions that take drivers' attention away from the road and can (and do) cost innocent people their lives. Which is usually not the people behind the wheel, in most cases; those people are protected by this huge hunk of metal armor with their insurance paid. So why should they feel much concern other than the traffic ticket and the inconvenience of it all?
I am amazed every single day at how people drive around in these several thousand pound murder weapons while continually being distracted by talking away on the phone which is much more important than the innocent lives that many of them end up snuffing out in an instant; many of which are innocent children or seniors. They pull right into the center of a cross-walk talking away without the slightest concern for those who need to get safely across the street without walking between cars, which is dangerous, or walking out into a busy intersection because someone became too distracted in their much-more-important conversations. Conversations which are obviously more important than their driving and the safety of pedestrians around them.

In spite of the apologies afterward, this practice of pulling into cross-walks and stopping happens to me EVERY SINGLE DAY at least once. As of late I no longer stand and wait for them or indicate to them that they're blocking the cross-walk. Instead I beat loudly on the top of the care or the hood or trunk with the flat of my hand while yelling "You're parked in a cross-walk! Get off the phone and pay attention to your driving!". Yes, a bit maniacle, I admit. It literally frightens the H%^* out of every one of them; especially since they were just in another world with their conversations and totally oblivious to what was going on in this one. Though some may feel this is maybe a bit obnoxious and overly aggressive, I guarantee that each one of these people will think twice about parking in the middle of a cross-walk again. And though 'everyone' needn't be so bold and go to such extremes (though I wish you would...), everyone does need to show their instant dissatisfaction over such irresponsible actions for the safety of all.

And just as importantly we all need to make sure the police do something about it when infractions of the cross-walk laws occur. Many, many too many times they do not. So why should the motorist care if the police don't care? Giving citations for such actions would cut the occurances tremendously as opposed to having the police see the infraction and do nothing, which I personally observe way too often. I have NEVER seen a policeman issue a cross-walk or cell phone citation though I have seen many of them take place with me personally right in front of a waiting cruiser.

Look at the statistics at how many people are killed in this country every year because of cell phones and we still don't get it. How many deaths and personal injuries does it take to cause us to wake up to the obvious? This practice is killing and maiming innocent people unnecessarily without a shadow of a doubt. If each one of us wants to gamble our own lives on such foolishness, so be it. That's our own choice. But we are gambling the lives of countless innocent others and it needs to stop.

I hate to say "I told you so"...but the truth is..."I told you so in 2007"...and the proof follows:

Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(Findings made by the Department of Transportation about the truth of the dangers regarding cell phone use were kept secret due to big money lobbyists for over 6 years. Heads should roll over this one but who's going to bet that they won't...)

The above body of research, conducted by the Department of Transportation and completed in 2003 was not made public until July, 2009. The documents pertain to the safety of using wireless communication devices while driving.
The New York Times obtained the research from the Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen, two consumer advocacy groups that earlier this year acquired more than 250 pages of undisclosed material through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The fact that this life-saving information that was paid for by our tax dollars was kept out of the public eye for so many years for no other reason than high-powered lobbying and bribes by the wireless communication industry is unconscionable. All of those in our government who knowingly allowed such abuse of power should not only be reprimanded, but their involvment should be made public for all to see. Related Article link follows.

(July, 2009) To finally view the findings of FOIA about the dangers of cell phone use while driving which were
determined in 2003 but concealed until 2009 due to heavy lobbying by the phone companies,

The unconscionable fact is that these results, which were paid for by our tax dollars were concealed until someone blew the whistle 6 years later....and probably after thousands of deaths and injuries had already taken place. Why?....because the big-money lobbyists are more important than the American citizens. The politics and disregard for public safety for the sake of bribes and big money government lobby money MUST STOP!!!
As a result of this cover up, heads should roll as opposed to sweeping these results under the rug and continuing this incredibly unsafe practice as usual. All Cell Phone Driving, not just texting and phone use for teenagers MUST BE INCLUDED! We are talking about the safety and well-being of millions of innocent American citizens and potential victims every single day. So let's not just blame it on and restrict it to texting and new drivers & teenagers...but rather ALL CELL PHONE USE being performed behind the wheel by EVERYONE!!

Now that Oprah has also taken on this project with a vengeance, I'm confident that America will soon wake up about the incredible dangers to each of us and to others through any form of cell phone driving (or at least America will be forced to spend a lot of Money on cell phone violations for those who don't) so that tens of thousands more Americans will not be injured and killed as has already happened to too many. We have all seen it; People floundering around on the roads while on their cell phones instead of paying attention to their driving. Too bad this always takes such a great loss of life of innocent people to wake us up to what should be common sense....
